Matt Gentry, current University of Chicago wrestling coach, 2x Olympian, and Stanford University NCAA Champion retired from competition following the 2012 Olympics but is excited to get back to teaching and coaching wrestlers of all ages. After competing on the national team for 6+ years, Coach Gentry has learned a variety of training methods and techniques from training and competing around the world. Coach Gentry believes in fundamental and basic wrestling techniques, hard work, and a positive attitude are required for success on the mats. More importantly, Coach Gentry learned a great deal about the mental side of wrestling for success not only in sport but in every aspect of life. Every practice, Coach Gentry will take time to talk about the mental side of wrestling such as pre-match routines, goal-setting, training mentalities, competition tips, importance of school, and more.

Modified Schedule Starting Monday 12/11/2023

Phase 2 of the renovation will begin tomorrow Monday, December 11. The renovated gym will have more mat space, more lockers, additional showers, individual changing rooms, new lighting, and more. Due to space constraints during construction, come to class prepared. During the renovation, the gym will have a modified schedule (see below).

Chicago MMA will host leg lock wizard and UFC Champion Matt Serra black belt Jason Rau for a masterclass on attacking the lower body. Jason is widely known as one of the most knowledgeable and technical leg lockers in the world. In a recent Lex Fridman podcast with the B-Team, Nicky Ryan called out Jason Rau as one of the best out there. 

After earning his black belt, Rau started training more regularly with John Danaher in New York City (Danaher was a training partner of Matt Serra's for many years at the Renzo Gracie Academy). Jason quickly climbed the ranks of the Danaher Death Squad (John’s elite group of students), and would go on to compete in many high profile events such as Kasai Pro and the BJJ Fanatics Grand Prix.
