2024 Summer Schedule Changes

2024 Summer Schedule Changes

Starting Monday 05/20/2024, we will be suspending the Monday and Wednesday morning and afternoon Muay Thai classes for the summer. The classes will be replaced by open gyms on Monday and Wednesday at 6:30A-7:30AM and 12PM-1:30PM. The open mat/gym sessions will be located in the main studio so that members can come in to workout or hit the bags. This DOES NOT impact the Tuesday and Thursday morning and afternoon Muay Thai classes.

Additionally, we will also be changing Tuesday, Thursday 6:30-7:30AM classes to be no-gi as well.

Feel free to reach out to us should you have questions or if you need additional assistance.

Thank you!

Chicago MMA will host leg lock wizard and UFC Champion Matt Serra black belt Jason Rau for a masterclass on attacking the lower body. Jason is widely known as one of the most knowledgeable and technical leg lockers in the world. In a recent Lex Fridman podcast with the B-Team, Nicky Ryan called out Jason Rau as one of the best out there

After earning his black belt, Rau started training more regularly with John Danaher in New York City (Danaher was a training partner of Matt Serra's for many years at the Renzo Gracie Academy). Jason quickly climbed the ranks of the Danaher Death Squad (John’s elite group of students), and would go on to compete in many high profile events such as Kasai Pro and the BJJ Fanatics Grand Prix.

For a sneak peak, you can find Jason's instructional videos on Youtube. In addition, Jason has released some instructional on BJJ Fanatics.

You can prepaid by sending a Venmo payment for $75 or $100 at the door.

2023 SPRING BELT PROMOTIONS

We would like to congratulate the members of our jiu-jitsu family promoted today. Not many people in the world are willing to put in the work and make the sacrifices to truly learn a combat art. It’s not easy; that’s why most drop out or never even try. This promotion is a testament to your character. Although belts may be nothing more than a piece of cloth, they symbolize something far greater—the warrior spirit. We are very proud of you!

Kids Program Starts Monday, April 4, 2022

Starting Monday, April 4, Chicago MMA will relaunch our Mixed Martial Arts and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program for kids ages 5-9 and youth ages 9-13. The programs are designed to introduce students to martial arts in a fun and safe environment.

Spring 2022 Belt Promotions

One of the greatest honors of being a teacher is seeing your students grow and develop, not just as martial artists but also as people. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is one of few remaining martial arts that does not reward participation. Belts are earned on the mat.

We are the by-product of the wars we wage in life and the struggles we overcome. For without suffering, there is no growth.

We are extremely proud of this year's class. It is an honor to be a part of your journey.

Remembering Brian Gassaway

Remembering Brian Gassaway

It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend, teacher, and mentor, Brian Gassaway (who was the head coach of our striking program).

The samurai lived by an unwritten moral code: the Bushido. Brian embodied the virtues of this code—loyalty, courage, justice, honor, mercy, compassion, character, and self-control—by his actions. He lived his life with purpose and goodness, dedicating every waking moment to being a better person, husband, friend, fighter, and coach. And at the same time, he elevated the lives of all the people around him.

Very few people have the courage to follow their dreams. Brian was one of them. He tested himself all over the world against some of the best fighters on the planet having competed in the UFC, Bellator, WEC, King of the Cage, Iron Heart Crown, Shooto and Pancrase. Brian had his hand raised 29 times but walked out of the ring a better man, a better fighter, after every single contest. In 2018, Brian was inducted into the Illinois Martial Arts Hall of Fame. And, announced just yesterday, in honor of Brian’s contribution to the art of Muay Thai in America, the Thai Boxing Association-Sanctioning Authority has created the Brian Gassaway Award.

With more than 50 professional MMA fights and countless kickboxing and Muay Thai competitions, Brian was one of the most experienced fighters and coaches in the world. It is as a coach where he truly excelled. Brian’s selfless pursuit of improving the lives of his students through the study of martial arts was apparent to all. He gave his students purpose, pulling many up during their darkest moments. Being the light that showed them the path forward.

Whether you were training for a fight on the big stage, competing in a smoker in a church basement, or training just to better yourself, Brian showed you the same love, effort, and attention. You always felt safe knowing that he was in the corner. His calmness gave you confidence as he wrapped your hands in preparation to go into battle. His words gave you the knowledge and experience of the countless wars he fought as you marched to the ring. And his energy gave you strength as the bell rang and you walked towards your opponent. One thing was certain: You always knew that Brian was fighting right there alongside you. And after the fights were fought, after the fans left the stadium, after the lights went dark, Brain was still there, sitting quietly alongside you.

Please know that as much as he helped you, you also helped him. You were the reason he lived. You gave him breath. He absorbed and learned from your experience, sharing it with the next student. As students and teachers of martial arts, we are a sum of the students and teachers before us.

Brian leaves behind his wife and best friend, Mimi, mother, and brother, Wesley.

Brian, our friend, our teacher, you will not be forgotten. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Because of you, we are stronger; we are braver; we are better people. I hope you knew how much you meant to us.

We love you, champ.
